As November ends and fall creeps into winter, our staff was asked to share their favorite songs, albums, movies, books, etc. Here were their responses.
Val: One of my new favorite albums is LUX by Rosalia because it is a multicultural experience as the singer combined female saints and mystics from different backgrounds, many languages and musical traditions such as classical, flamenco, avant-pop and choral. The album was released on Nov. 7 and it is her fourth studio album. In the lyrics, Rosalia uses 13 different languages like Spanish, Catalan, English, Japanese, Arabic, German, Italian, Mandarin and more. The album surrounds themes like spirituality and mysticism and references to female saints and mystics like Saint Teresa of Avila in the songs “Reliquia,” “DIvinize” and “Sauvignon Blanc.” My favorite track is “La Perla” which is a collaboration between Rosalia and the trio, Yahritza y su Esencia. I like this song because of its deep lyrics which are rumored to be directed toward her ex-partner Rauw Alejandro, one of my favorite latino singers, who she dated for about four years and was engaged to. In this album, Rosalia turns her life into an artistic matter that deserves all the recognition that is getting.
Eva: Favorite song from November: Living in a Memory by the Growlers.
Favorite movie from November: getting Christmas movies started early with A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Ava: Killing Me Softly With His Song by Fugees which is my media of the month. I really enjoy the passion that the song brings. Fugees and the lyrics of the song are expressing how much their partner knows them, with a lyric that says “telling my whole life with his words.” The song has become one of my favorite Fugees songs.
Marley: As November brought in the cold weather, I’ve been watching a holiday show called Dash and Lily. It’s a Netflix show based on the novels by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, which are also really good. The show features two teenagers who pass a notebook back and forth around New York City, without actually seeing each other. It’s the perfect rom-com winter show to see the discoveries they make, and it’s an easy binge show too.
Vicki: My media of the month is Crazy Rich Asians, which is a drama/love story. The movie is about a mom not accepting her son’s new girlfriend because she thinks the girlfriend, Rachel, is a gold digger, but she doesn’t even know know her boyfriend’s family are multi-billionaires. In the end,the son proposed to Rachel; although the mom may have not been the happiest about it, she was still there for them.
Ellery: For this month, I watched Speak. It was very good and sad.
Caiden: For November, I have been listening to Pushing It Down and Praying by Lizzy McAlpine. This song has had such a good chokehold on me for all the right reasons. The lyrics “I want you to need me need me, I need to want somethin’ more,” mean a lot to me. I interpret these lyrics as a relationship that is slowly falling apart because one person can feel the other slowly moving on and not giving enough.
Sarah: Wicked: For Good came out recently this month so I watched it. In my opinion, I don’t really like musicals and the second Wicked movie has a ton of singing. In the end, I started to dislike Elphaba because of the sneaky things she did to Glinda even though they made up. I really like how they added a reference to the Wizard of Oz.
