This review may contain spoilers for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”
Super Mario is a video game franchise for Nintendo, which recently moved into animated movies covering all types of content: games, merchandise and movies.
Three years after “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, Illumination and Nintendo came out with a sequel movie, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”. In my opinion, I think this movie is a major step up compared to the last. In this movie the plot was centered on the overtake of Bowser and his son.
The movie is related to the games where the storyline takes place.
I first heard of the movie coming out from my mother when she said she wanted to see it. I had no expectations when I went into seeing the movie, but the plot really surprised me on how detailed and interesting the story was.
I do not keep up with the Mario background or franchise at all, so during this movie I like how they subtly explained the background of characters, such as the relationship of Rosalina and Princess Peach. I liked the introduction of the storyline, I feel like the creators did a great job in the timeline of things played out.
I did notice some changes from the editing side of things and animation, at the beginning of the movie I thought it was a completely separate movie from the original Mario Bros. movie, but it turned out it was a sequel.
In both of the movies Jack Black played Bowser, adding on to the comedic side of things; he was the perfect choice for that part. His other roles, such as Steve from “A Minecraft Movie”, and just the type of actor he is, set the mood with his familiar voice.
I enjoyed how they introduced new characters that weren’t shown in the last movie; Rosalina was the perfect addition making the movie that much better. I never knew what the movie would uncover about the relations of the characters.
Even though the antagonist of the movie isn’t meant for the viewers to have empathy for them, because of their negative impact, I still managed to feel bad for Bowser Jr.. The story behind why he wanted to rise to the greater power was touching because he didn’t know better. He just wanted to make his dad proud.
I loved the story behind the sisters showing the true meaning behind the movie, the power of unity. Hands down one of my favorite scenes, along with the Bowser Jr. with his dad and the sock puppets.
I tend not to reach towards movies that are aimed for kids but this movie exceeded my expectations for this genre of films.
