“Sinners” (2025), the 16 Oscar-nominated, cinematic thriller, is on track to take wins at the 2026 Oscars on March 15. Director Ryan Coogler brought both supernatural evils and southern 1900s culture to every screen.
“Sinners” was an internet sensation during 2025, especially due to its starring actors, Hailee Steinfeld and Michael B. Jordan. Using a mix of split-screen techniques and specialized cameras, Jordan was able to take on the double role of the Smokestack twins.
Jordan was impressively able to switch personas depending on who he was playing. The twins, Smoke and Stack, are alike but very different. Stack, the red-attired twin, is carefree and charismatic. Smoke, the blue-attired twin, is more grounded and focused. He does a phenomenal job; it even made his costars feel as if they were with different people whenever they did scenes with him.
The twins returned to their hometown, Clarksdale Mississippi, after they stirred up trouble in Chicago. Mississippi is known as the birthplace of the blues, which also incorporated religion and history in the movie.
The setting is more than a background. The movie takes place when Jim Crow laws dominated the South. These laws enforced heavy racial segregation and limited the opportunities for Black Americans. Coogler didn’t ignore this; instead, he included it in the center of the story, showing the tensions and hardships during that time.
This representation means a lot, especially in reality. The twins bought the building from a white southern man, who claimed he wouldn’t be back the next day with his group. The man, in fact, did return the next day, threatening them.
The struggles Black Americans had in the South were visualized as you saw them working in fields all day and the excitement they had when they were invited to relief at the new joint.
Religion also played a part in the main character’s storyline. Sammie, known as Preacher Boy, the cousin of the twins, works as a sharecropper with musical talent. He is also the son of the Reverend, who warns him that playing music at the opening juke joint will lead to corruption.
“If you keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home,” his father said, foreshadowing the sinister tone throughout the rest of the movie.
Music plays the biggest role in “Sinners”. Clarksdale is known as the home of the “Delta blues,” which is a genre that influenced a lot of modern music. Throughout the movie, blues becomes a way for the characters to express emotions, freedom, and identity. The soundtrack and performances give the authentic feel to the setting and help the audience immerse themselves in the culture of the South.
What makes “Sinners” unique to other historical movies is how Coogler blends history with a supernatural thriller. The movie introduces a vampire storyline with the mixes of horror, romance, and tragedy into the narrative. Instead of feeling random, the horror elements are able to strengthen the theme of morality.
Visually, this movie is imposing. The cinematography captures the warm but haunting atmosphere. This, combined with the music, lighting, and culture representations, make all the scenes feel intentional and lively.
Overall, “Sinners” deserves every Oscar nomination because it combines historical storytelling, distinctive genre mixes, and history. Coogler tells a story that is entertaining and impactful to the audience by mixing the blues culture, American history, and supernatural suspense. “Sinners” is more than just a thriller. It’s a film that stays in mind after the credits roll.
