To mark the end of September, our staff members were asked to share their favorite artist, movie, book, song, lyric, album, etc. Here are their responses.
Tristan: Since seeing her in concert earlier this month, I’ve been really enjoying Lucy Dacus’ music. My favorite songs currently are “Best Guess,” “Ankles,” “VBS,” and “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore.” I love both her writing style and the instrumentation of all of those songs.
Eva: Cooler weather always brings a wave of nostalgia. I have been rewatching my favorite old movies like “Calamity Jane”, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “My Fair Lady.” I’ve also been listening to my unreleased Lana Del Rey playlist because it matches the Old-Hollywood vibe.
Tristain: As school starts back up and the stress piles up, my cure for burnout is a South Korean drama, “Young Adult Matters”. Although this movie is very straightforward and raw, it’s my comfort movie. The movie is remarkably honest as it reveals a side of society that most of us aren’t prepared for. It portrays a runaway 18-year-old high school girl who’s going through a real-life crisis on the streets. It’s more of a comfort movie for me because the way it was filmed, along with the nostalgic feeling the movie gives you, creates a unique emotional space.
Ava: My Media of the Month is “10 Things I Hate About You,” a movie about romance that proves love has no bounds.
Marley: During September, I’ve been listening to the album “Sling” by Clairo. As fall begins, Clairo’s lyrics in the songs “Harbor,” “Blouse,” and my personal favorite “Bambi” really stand out. I love how “Bambi” captures the struggles she had in the music industry, and how she needs to take time for her creativity. I also enjoy the various instruments used in the song, like the woodwinds and drums, which I think add warmth to the song.
Emmie: At the moment, I have been loving the Harptones. Especially the song “If I Give My Heart to You.” I love how the first verse after the background singers. The way the control of his voice is. Just as much, I have been liking the song “Be That Easy” by Sade.
Vicki: My media of the month is Great Pretender by Dominic Fike. It comes from his newest album Rocket, which is named after his son. Great pretender explains how someone is posing or pretending around everyone else, but he’s the one who knows them for their true self. “Oh, you’re a great pretender, the influencer who always spoke so kindly” further explains how they’re just a poser pretending to be this completely different person.
Caiden: This September, I’ve been listening to the album “Grade Pending” by Whatever, Dad. As the weather gets cooler, I have been listening to more music with a melancholic vibe. One of my favorite songs from the album is “O.K.” This song is one of my favorites because I relate to the lyrics “We can still be friends at the end of the day.” I interpret these lyrics as two friends arguing, but at the end of the day they will still be friends.
Ellery: In the month of September, I finished the book “Girl in Pieces” by Kathleen Glasgow, a heart shattering novel about an emotionally broken girl, Charlotte Davis. I would rate this book an 8.5/10, only because the ending didn’t satisfy me. Overall, it was still a fantastic read and I would recommend it.
Sarah: At the moment, I am currently reading “Brave New Girl” by Rachel Vincent. It is a 16 year old girl, Dahlia, who is in a nursery. Every class in this nursery is made up of thousands of identical people. Dahlia 16 finds herself in a dilemma with a boy, Trigger 17. In this nursery, people can’t talk to certain people. For example Dahlia 16 isn’t allowed to talk to Trigger 17 at all. Trigger ends up tricking Dahlia into talking to him and they end up falling in love. They keep doing this, risking their lives.
