Check out Mrs. Bowlan in the library

Santa Fe welcomes Heather Bowlan into the library this semester and for school years to come. Mrs. Bowlan was a freshman English teacher, who, after Winter break, transitioned into being a librarian.

“I already had my Master’s degree in guidance and counseling, so I only have to add it as a certificate. I’m on my final class now, I only have to take 18 more hours which is six classes at OSU to add the certificate,” Bowlan said.

When asked if she always wanted to be a librarian for the school or even in general Bowlan said yes. She’s always had a passion for reading, often dragging her siblings to the library when she was a kid.

“In fact, this summer I was talking to my siblings, and we were talking about how every summer I would go and take them to the public library,” Bowlan said. “They said I would drag them along, and me and my sister would take part in the library programs, though my brother didn’t leave with his arms overflowing with books like me and my sister.”

However, although people see English class and the library as things that go hand in hand, that’s not always the case; there are big adjustments that Mrs. Bowlan has to undergo as she transitions into being a librarian.

“So far, it’s been really busy because I immediately came in and there was freshman research,” Bowlan said. “But it’s nice because I don’t have to fully immerse myself in the tiring research project agenda. I help them find their books and that’s all.”

When asked what’s one thing she misses most about last semester and teaching English, Bowlan said the tight bonds you create with your students.

“When you’re in a class teaching people so much you start to learn who they are, but now I don’t get to see these kids as much and that’s been really tough,” Bowlan said.

Though kids still visit from time to time, changing jobs can be hard; only seeing Mrs. Bowlan a few times a week is not the same as seeing her in class every day, as her former students are starting to figure out.

However, the library’s future with Mrs.Bolwan is looking bright and Bowlan says she is adjusting well to working in the library. Go and visit the library and see Mrs.Bowlan and support Santa Fe’s newest librarian.
