On Aug. 22, singer-songwriter Laufey, released her third studio album “A Matter of Time,” which earned praise from artists like Clairo, Aaron Dessner and Olivia Rodrigo.
Laufey first teased the album on April 3 by releasing a hit single “Silver Lining,” and then on May 15 Laufey officially announced her album, as well as dropping another single titled “Tough Luck.”
Laufey’s album is a mix of jazz, alternative and indie-pop. Her album is about self-exploration and overcoming the realities of love.
The album features the following people: Clairo, Aaron Dessner, Spencer Stewart and the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. Featuring various different artists brings in more listeners and adds musical variety to the album.
After listening to the album in its entirety, these five tracks really stood out to me.
Mr. Eclectic (ft. Clairo) – 8/10
“Mr. Eclectic,” a song about a “performative male” and Laufey’s seemingly annoyed stance on them, is one that blew up instantly for its relatable and humorous lyrics. Her enchanting vocals, paired with Clairo, make the song a great listen.
Snow White – 10/10
In the song “Snow White,” the lyrics, “can’t help but notice, all of the ways in which I failed myself,” shows how self-doubt affects your interpretation of yourself. I like this song because of how relatable, catchy and captivating it is.
Carousel – 9.2/10
In “Carousel,” Laufey explains the vulnerability and fear of being genuinely seen by another person. She uses the metaphor of a carousel to describe the chaotic and unpredictable nature of life. I enjoy this song because of how slow the tempo is.
Too Little, Too Late – 10/10
“Too Little, Too Late” reflects on a past relationship being overshadowed by Laufey’s former lover’s new relationship with somebody else. Her usage of the metaphor, “laying down a sword,” refers to the fact that she has surrendered to fate and the acceptance of lost chances with her ex-lover.
Sabotage – 8.9/10
“Sabotage,” is about having an irrational fear of self-sabotaging in a relationship. In the song, Laufey uses eerie cello notes throughout the track to represent anxiety. The lyrics “I get in my head so easily I don’t understand, I’m my worst enemy” resonate with me because of how relatable it is.
Overall, “A Matter of Time” was an incredible album and is perfect for anyone who wants to get into modern jazz-alternative music.
