After growing up in California, Brianna Broersma moved to Oklahoma for a lower cost of living in 2007. After all her years of teaching, including two years in California schools and 17 years at Summit Middle School, she is now teaching at Santa Fe.
Before having a teaching career, Broersma worked at Disneyland for three years during college. Despite being interested in turning her Disney job into a career, she stuck with teaching. After finishing college at California State University Fullerton, Broersma worked in the insurance industry for a couple of years.
“You know, you’re dealing with people all day who want money from you, and if you don’t give them what they want, they can get kind of unpleasant,” Broersma said. “I just decided that that was not for me so that’s when you know I decided to go back and become a teacher.”
Since she previously had a degree, Broersma attended Polytechnic University Pomona from 2004 to 2005 for a one year teacher program to get her teaching license.
Wanting to switch things up in her career, she transferred to Santa Fe. Now teaching English IV, Broersma has seen the difference between middle schoolers and high schoolers.
“Honestly just maturity and some behavior, you know, obviously kids are kids,” Broersma said. “I would say the biggest difference in middle school is sometimes the kids. Even if you witness them making a poor choice, they may not want to admit it, and high schoolers are more likely to own up to it and be willing to take a consequence and correct their behavior.”
In her freetime, Broersma enjoys taking her dog outside to pet friendly areas such as restaurant patios, dog parks and Starbucks. Broersma is a self-proclaimed Disney nerd, but she is also a heavy metal fan. She goes to Disney parks at least once a year.
“I go to Disney whenever I can obviously, you know not on the weekends or anything but during vacations whenever I can,” Broersma said.
Teaching for 20 years Broersma has had a lot of time to practice and become “the queen of dress up days” she not only brought competition for other teachers, she also joined the Fe.
