Christmas playlists are one of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit. If you’re tired of hearing the same five songs this time of year or just want something different, here is a list of the best Christmas covers that add a little extra spice to your holiday playlist.
This version of Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is my go-to for the holiday season. It has more of an indie rock feel when compared to the original; however, the use of bells during the drum solo ties the holiday feel in. The song feels like the Christmas party scene in some coming-of-age movie. The little bell jingle at the end of the song always fills me with cheer.
Laufey’s (lay-vay) cover of Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” brings in a warm jazz element that isn’t present in the original song. The intro tune is the epitome of the jolly feeling associated with Christmastime. Every aspect of this song meshes so well: the vocals, bass guitar, cello, flute bring it all together. Laufey’s voice has this warm depth to it that fits holiday music perfectly.
7 O’Clock News / Silent Night – Phoebe Bridgers
Of all of Bridgers’ annual holiday covers, this version of Simon and Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News / Silent Night” is my favorite. Released during winter of 2020, a time when there was so much going on in the world, this song overlays a news broadcast of current events over a heavenly sounding cover of the classic “Silent Night.” While it’s a sadder song, it’s still a great addition to any playlist.
Little Saint Nick – Best Coast
Similar to Lucy Dacus’ version of “Last Christmas,” Best Coast’s cover of The Beach Boys’ “Little Saint Nick” leans into the indie rock genre. Vocalist Bethany Cosentino’s voice suits this genre of Christmas music perfectly. The buzzy guitar provides this fuzzy winter feel, which is great for any holiday playlist.
Wonderful Christmastime – The Shins
Originally sung by Paul McCartney, “Wonderful Christmastime” is one of the best songs for spreading Christmas cheer. This song feels like sipping hot cocoa while looking at bright and colorful Christmas lights with your best friends.
