“Living in a metro area like Edmond we as students don’t always get opportunities or chances to become involved in our tribes and communities,” said Junior Amira Newsom, Founder and President of Native American Student Association (NASA)
Newsom has grown up and prospered in the indigenous community of Oklahoma. She was Junior Miss Seminole Oklahoma of 2022-2023. This opportunity to be inducted into this role has given Newson the chance to be an active member in not only her tribes but tribes around the Country.
“I traveled around the country as an ambassador for my tribe and I’m very involved in the native community by attending volunteering events, tribal events,” Newsom said.
Starting NASA was an idea that came easy to Newsom considering how active she is in her tribe. She gets to see first hand all of the things an indigenous tribe can bring to her and wants to share this with her peers.
“I wanted to create this club for the native kids at Santa Fe to have a community and place to participate and learn about native culture,” Newsom said.
NASA is a club that all people of Santa Fe are encouraged to join Indigenous or not. If you want to learn more about this new club don’t hesitate to check out their Instagram page for all upcoming events.
If you have any questions about this club or simply want to donate knowledge, or money, to them their club sponsor is Morgan Mason.
