On Wednesday, Mar. 26 Santa Fe’s newspaper, The Howler, and broadcasting, KSFN, staff members traveled to downtown Oklahoma City to participate in Oklahoma Scholastic Media’s (OSM) Spring Media Day.
This year’s event was hosted at the Paycom Center, home of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G league affiliate team. As a part of their registration package, advisers and students were offered tickets to the Oklahoma City Blue game held that evening.
“Spring Media Day was fun, I enjoyed going with my class and it was a great environment,” senior broadcasting member Keara Lee said. “It felt rewarding to win two first place awards and watch my hard work pay off. I originally was nervous going into the day because I feared I wouldn’t place my senior year.”
OSM provides student journalists from across the state the opportunity to compete for a chance to win awards. Categories vary in styles of publication which include online newspapers, magazines, broadcast videos and physical newspapers.
The Howler took home three first place awards, three third place awards and two honorable mentions. KSFN won four first place awards, four second place awards, three third place awards and four honorable mentions.
Additionally, first year staff member Tristan Haley was named Writer of the Year.
“Other than the fact that even being nominated for this award means so much to me, it’s going to benefit me on my upcoming college applications,” Haley said. “I plan on studying journalism and becoming a journalist. This award helps confirm that I have what it takes.”
Following the award ceremony, attendees got the chance to hear from four guest speakers. Jenni Carlson shared her experience as a sports reporter. Tevis Hillis, a graduate of the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College, spoke about her role as a News 9 anchor. Clara Roark provided insight into her work as a copywriter for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Alexandra Talty discussed her journey to becoming an independent reporter with work appearing in The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes and more.
“I am extremely proud of The Howler staff for overcoming a lot of obstacles this year,” Staff Adviser Callie Reichert said. “They have achieved so much and I am proud.”
