Tyler Gregory Okonma, commonly known as Tyler, the Creator, drops his seventh studio album “Chromakopia” on Oct. 28 marking his first project since his 2021 album “Call Me If You Get Lost.”
Before the release of his 14-track album, Tyler, the Creator dropped music videos for “St. Chroma” and “Noid.” Closer to the album’s launch, he released the music video for “Thought I Was Dead.” Through these videos, Tyler, the Creator built anticipation, giving fans glimpses of what was in store with “Chromakopia”.
As a longtime fan of Tyler, the Creator, I’ve found that it is easy to love and appreciate his art. He’s consistently fresh, talented and unique, a breath of fresh air compared to many modern artists. For this album, he took an especially unique approach to promotion: trucks carrying green shipping containers labeled Chromakopia drove across the country, creating a buzz among fans who spotted them.
The album features collaborations with popular artists like Lil Wayne, GloRilla and Childish Gambino, further boosting Tyler’s appeal by collaborating with artists that fans love.
“Chromakopia” had many standout tracks, but four really caught my attention.
St. Chroma – 4.8/5
“St. Chroma” is the album’s opening track and it does a great job at setting the tone. With beautiful vocals and a well constructed chorus, this song is hard to forget. The crescendo in the beginning of the song is perfect. It’s a minor change that makes the biggest difference.
Darling, I – 5/5
“Darling, I” is a lovely upbeat song with a nostalgic boy band vibe. I love its theme and infectious beat. The chorus is catchy and features relatable lyrics that many people can resonate with. I think Tyler, the Creator has a knack for being relatable and vulnerable as it seems to be a common theme in many of his songs.
Hey Jane – 4.7/5
“Hey Jane” prompts some reflection on life, with Tyler, the Creator sharing personal growth and wisdom. The storytelling propels the song forward as it shifts from T receiving life-changing news to Jane’s perspective. The beat is distinct and reminiscent of past eras. The nostalgic touch adds to the song’s appeal.
Like Him – 4.8/5
In “Like Him,” Tyler, the Creator revisits his relationship with his father, a recurring theme across his albums. The track dives into the complex emotion of resentment, but the end offers a sense of closure.
In 2025, Tyler will go on his Chromakopia world tour, with stops in Europe, North America and Oceania. Until then, fans will be enjoying this quintessentially crafted album from their homes.
