As my New Year’s resolution a few years ago, I decided to create musical time capsules in the form of monthly playlists, featuring my favorite songs for the month. Since then, I’ve made 32 playlists. Here are my top 5 songs for August 2024.
“Before the World Was Big” – Girlpool
This was the first song I played when I woke up on the first day of school this year. With lyrics like, “7:45 in the morning, I’m leaving my house” and “I just miss how it felt standing next to you, wearing matching dresses before the world was big,” it definitely fits the back to school season. The singing is more on the talking side and the instrumentals are sharp, which compliments the bittersweet feeling to the song.
“Juna” – Clairo
Since the release of Clairo’s album, “Charm,” in July, “Juna” has been constantly stuck in my head. Something about the funky bass, the whimsical piano and the soft vocals makes me want to dance. It’s become Clairo’s most popular song on Spotify, and she performed it on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
“Mayonaise” – The Smashing Pumpkins
As the weather gets cooler, this song always makes its way onto my playlists. The way the guitar meshes so well with Billy Corgan’s voice makes me ascend. The main lyric in the song, “fool enough to almost be it, cool enough to not quite see it,” has always stuck with me for some reason.
“Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl” – yeule
Despite not being a 17 year-old girl, this has become my anthem this past month. I originally heard this specific version of the song when I watched, “I Saw the TV Glow,” (one of my favorite movies), in theaters. The song has a sentimental and nostalgic feeling to it and I personally like this version better than the original because of that.
“This Is How It Went” – beabadoobee
I have been a fan of Bea since I was in sixth-grade and have also been invested in the stories behind her songs since then. “This Is How It Went” is about her song, “the way things go,” which she wrote about her ex-boyfriend dating her best friend after they broke up. Following the song’s release, the two posted a picture together with “I guess that’s just the way things go” as the caption. The lyrics in “This Is How It Went” show her side of the story, how she felt, and how it affected her. Lyrics like, “it was my song, oh, just a song,” and “you made it worse just by singing along,” resonate with me a lot.
