As the 2024 summer season comes to a close, Santa Fe’s rising seniors face the reality that their high school careers are coming to an end.
Upperclassmen might develop a case of senioritis, a term used to describe a decline in education-related motivation, and dreams of the future are bound to ignite sentiment in the class of 2025. The subsequent school year draws the question to mind: What are the rights and wrongs of senior year?
“I think doing everything you’ve always wanted to do in high school is right, and just going through the motions is wrong,” Madison Edwards said. “Most of these people you won’t ever see again after you walk across that stage, so take advantage of everything you can.”
After graduating in 2022, Madison headed to The University of Missouri-St. Louis, where volleyball and school work took up most of her time. This year, she will be attending Oklahoma City University while majoring in business marketing.
“I regret not signing up for clubs and events that I was too scared to participate in,” Edwards said. “There was no reason for me to leave myself out of anything I had interest in, but other than that I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Political science and economics major at The University of Oklahoma, Preston Salameh, spent his time at Santa Fe building core memories.
“I don’t really have any regrets,” Salameh said. “I would just say that you can never spend too much time with your friends, especially if you won’t see them as much after you graduate.”
Preston lists a couple of rights and wrongs that could help guide upcoming seniors:
Rights:
- Tour plenty of colleges
- Take AP classes and tests for college credit
- Go to football games
- Attend Double Wolf Dare Week (DWDW) events
- Find your college roommates early on
Wrongs:
- Procrastinate college applications
- Not appreciating your last year of high school
Senior year is for making memories, doing things you’ve always wanted to and taking positive steps towards bettering your future. At the end of the day, you decide your own rights and wrongs. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, grow and learn. Remember, every choice you make is a stepping stone to the life ahead of you.
