Black History Month: On the road to freedom and equality

Annabelle Gentling, Howler Staff Writer

With the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and the heightened awareness of racial prejudices celebrating Black History Month is more important than ever.

Some of the activists and people that paved the way in the equal rights movement, are Malcolm X, Sojourner Truth and Martin Luther King Jr. The Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot, has now been turned into a museum and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia. If you aren’t able to travel that far, there are places here in Oklahoma where history is alive and rich like the  African American History and Culture Museum in Oklahoma

As an Ally, you can support Black History Month as well. These museums aren’t just for Black people, they’re for everyone. They exist so that people of all colors can learn about how African-Americans have shaped the world. People can also honor such activists and movements by attending parades and celebrations.

As allies, you too can contribute to helping bring awareness to Black History. Consider talking to a Black friend about the struggles of being Black in America or simply support a Black-owned business. Find ways, such as reading articles and books like “How to Be an Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi and watching documentaries to support the needs of the Black community and bring change that is desperately needed in this country.

Celebrating Black History Month is not limited to one race. This month was meant to be celebrated together and meant to show that unity is achievable through understanding others.
