What is Student Council?
Santa Fe Student Council (STUCO) is a student-led organization designed to build leadership and personal development in students. Elected by their peers and guided by Andrew Rosko, the STUCO lead teacher, the student council members actively manage school activities and promote school spirit.
STUCO makes committees and brainstorms plans with their sponsor and principal about school events that the students would enjoy. Next, they tackle these ideas with the help of the students and sometimes outside schools, such as Edmond Memorial and Edmond North.
“We host little events to keep school pushing for fun spirit weeks,” senior STUCO member Ian Jenkins said. “We even have multiple leadership workshops and conferences throughout the year.”
A significant part of STUCO is that they are widely known for planning and designing spirit weeks such as Double Wolf Dare Week (DWDW), Howdy Week and Homecoming Week. During work days, the council decorates the school in the theme of the week and provides multiple ways to donate money to the school or sponsors.
“The planning process for spirit weeks is a months-long process, picking a recipient and our theme which is a thought-out process to match our visions of the week,” Jenkins said.
Beyond School
Beyond the organized events, STUCO provides opportunities for student involvement and personal growth. Growing these opportunities is made possible by STUCO getting together to spend time with each other and build a family-like bond.
“My favorite part of being in student council is how it feels like a second family,” freshman STUCO member Cailyn Tu said. “I love how I can talk to anyone in the council, and I know they will be there for me.”
The council’s activities give a sense of inclusion and belonging to the student body. In addition, this creates a long-lasting positive platform for students and benefits the community around them.
“Student council comes with so many bonding opportunities and opens so many doors to people who never got the right chance to start out high school,” Jenkins said. “This group will make anyone who joins feel like they’re enough and making a difference.”
To find more information about joining, attend the Student Council information meeting on March 27, during fifth period, in the main cafeteria. If unable to attend, grab a sign-up sheet from STUCO sponsor Rosko (room 145).
