Skaters gathered in Norman, Oklahoma, at Blake Baldwin Skate Park to compete in a skateboarding competition on March 9th in hopes of raising money for Oklahoma University Future Skaters.
The event was organized by Crimson Cruisers, they aim to provide better quality skateboards and equipment to new skaters who might not be able to afford new boards.
Santa Fe sophomore Dmantay Armstrong participated in a game of S.K.A.T.E., advancing through the first two rounds without receiving any letters. He successfully landed difficult tricks such as a 360 flip, hard flip, and backside heelflip. In the semifinals, Armstrong faced a tough opponent and was eventually eliminated.
“It was a really difficult competition,” Armstrong said. “There are a lot of really good skaters here today, and the competition was tough, to say the least.”
Attendees could watch the competition, shop at a nearby thrift store, grab food from a food truck, listen to live music or browse the skate shop.
The competition featured challenges and games such as Best Trick in Bowl, this event is where skaters have 90 seconds to do their very best tricks in a concrete bowl and the best trick wins, Drag Race, a bracket style race between two skaters around the skatepark, Highest Air Out where skaters will go as high as they can out of a ramp, and S.K.A.T.E., a game where players attempt to land tricks set by their opponent. If a player fails to complete the trick, they receive a letter. The first person to spell out “S.K.A.T.E.” loses the game.
Overall, the event raised $1,200 to support new skaters. The funds will help provide better-quality skateboards for those getting started in the sport.
