On Saturday Jan. 18, Santa Fe Wolves varsity boys and girls basketball teams faced off against the North Huskies; the North boys won 56-63 and the North girls won 48-75.
By the end of the first half, the boys’ score was tied 29-29. With the start of the second half, the Huskies took the lead.
Whether a win or a loss, sophomore and girls basketball player Aniston Jones expresses how preparation before a game is necessary to get players´ minds and bodies ready to focus for a game.
“Usually before a game, I will stretch out, focus on shots,” Jones said. “I will also take in the game- practice it and just warm up with my team.”
Mental focus is a major part of playing sports; making sure that all players are on the same page mentally can be extremely helpful for a team.
“Stretching and getting my mind right, but mostly making sure your team is ready for the game,” junior and boys basketball player Marcos Aguilar said.
While preparation is important, it’s just a small portion of what players do to succeed during a game. Despite the high stakes for both teams, they kept good sportsmanship throughout.
Although the teams come from different schools, they play very similarly with their offense, defense and how they treat their opposing team with good sportsmanship.
