A week before second semester began, Edmond Public Schools (EPS) Superintendent Dr. Angela Grunewald announced that she is retiring at the end of the 24-25 school year.
Grunewald has been part of the EPS district for 17 years. Grunewald stated that serving EPS has been the “highlight” of her career.
“I love this district, our students and staff members deeply,” Grunewald said. “I have enjoyed my 17 years in Edmond immensely.”
In this transitional time, EPS is seeking a new superintendent to step in following her retirement.
“I’m confident that a leader equally or even more passionate about education and Edmond Schools will be found,” Grunewald said.
Grunewald made history by becoming the first female superintendent in June 2021, leading Oklahoma’s third-largest district. Though she became a superintendent in EPS, she had to work her way up.
After working as an elementary school teacher in Snyder, El Reno and Leedey, Grunewald joined the Edmond district as an assistant principal and later served as principal at Charles Haskell Elementary. She later transitioned to Piedmont Public Schools, where she was Director of Curriculum and Instruction before becoming Assistant Superintendent at Mustang Public Schools.
After returning to EPS in 2016 as Executive Director of Elementary Education, Grunewald became the Superintendent of EPS.
With Grunewald’s departure, EPS plans to announce a new superintendent in the spring of 2025.
