Black Friday is a global holiday, originating in the U.S., where people would get in long lines before sunrise to get the best deals in preparation for the holiday season. However, it seems that many people have lost interest in Black Friday in the past few years, while Cyber Monday is becoming more popular.
People don’t want to go shopping at 6 a.m. anymore because prices aren’t as cheap as they used to be due to new and more expensive tech like AirPods, TVs, phones, etc.
“It costs more to make the stuff so they can only discount it so far,” Spanish teacher Paige Garrett said.
Since 2014, Cyber Monday has continued to grow in popularity, with more deals available online than in-store.
“In person Black Friday slowed down, I think there’s less people that go to the stores than there used to be,” Garrett said. “I think the big sales of the past like that I used to experience when I was a kid, aren’t as big anymore.”
Most people are now using Cyber Monday to buy gifts for others. It’s more convenient, helps the buyer stay on budget and allows them to avoid crowds.
“I’m able to target the specific item that I want at that moment,” Garrett said. “I don’t have to go on a quest to find it.”
Higher discounts are what seems to be causing the loss of interest for Black Friday shoppers. Students at Santa Fe appear to feel the same.
“It’s not as crazy as it used to be, it’s a lot easier with online stuff now,” senior Brynnlee Wavloord said. “Everything is more expensive now, companies think that they can get away with not lowering prices as much.”
Black Friday will always be the day of discounts even though Cyber Monday keeps growing in popularity.
