Santa Fe students performed “Play On!” on Nov. 15-16, a show meant to go wrong. The play includes comedy, sudden change of script and breaking the fourth wall.
During rehearsal, students worked hard to stay in character and memorize their lines, with those two being their biggest struggle.
“Act two was dress rehearsals, so they said the same lines as act one, but different things happened during those lines, so they had little mess ups in that, too then act three was the actual show where they were still saying the same lines, but that’s when everything went wrong,” director and drama teacher and director of “Play On!” Marisa Skube-Carr said.
As the show went on, the cast broke the fourth wall; this became more common as the play continued. Some of the cast members were in the audience shouting to the front of the stage.
“I love having actors walk through the audience because I think it keeps the audience on their toes,” Skube-Carr said.
In the play, the director was constantly changing the lines. These changes caused concern among the cast that they might not be ready by opening night. Many mistakes were made, but with the play being titled “Play On!,” they played on.
“In the under-study show, one of the kids’ mic fell off, and so it was like flapping behind his head, they were trying to fix it while saying their lines,” Skube-Carr said. “He eventually just sat there and held it and was walking around holding his mic until he went off stage, which, you know, in a normal show, you would be mortified that that happened, but in this show, it worked out because things were supposed to go wrong.”
From rehearsal to the actual performances, the cast was ready to “Play On!”
