For nearly two decades, William Arbuckle, a math teacher at Santa Fe High School, has surprised students and faculty alike with his elaborate Halloween costumes. The longstanding tradition all started in 2005, with a Mr. Incredible costume.
“For the longest time I was so busy, I had no school spirit. After doing the bare minimum I thought, why not go all out. So in ‘05 the tradition snowballed into every dress up day,” Arbuckle said.
Arbuckle keeps his costume a complete secret until the 31st, but the dedication goes far beyond keeping it quiet. From shaving his head to growing a beard, these costumes require planning far in advance.
“Sometimes I’ll start as early as November for the next October,” Arbuckle said “The change is so drastic it makes me look more like the character.”
His transformations have become a hallmark for the school’s halloween festivities. The documented history of his costumes is available in this slideshow.
“The students really enjoy it, they try to guess but usually don’t get too close even with hints,” Arbuckle said.
This year’s big reveal was an impressive Maxine Le Mal outfit inspired by Despicable Me 4. We can’t wait to see what next year has in store. Santa Fe is always in for a treat.
