Santa Fe’s varsity pom team placed 14th in the region and qualified for state Gameday championship on Friday, November 12.

Game day is a competition that focuses on sideline chants and cheers and turns it into a competitive event. The pom team has always wanted to participate in Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA), but this year is the first year OSSAA has offered them an opportunity.

“The team practices every day for two hours. This practice consists of them running multiple drills to improve certain skills and work on cleaning up their overall routine,” said Pom head coach Alyssa Friesen.

Pom is more than cheering at games, practicing and competition. It gives the girls a safe space to be themselves and be with people who enjoy dancing.

“We consider ourselves a family and enjoy our time together,” Ms.Friesen said.

With all the hard training, their goal overall is to raise their score from regionals.

“Looking at how hard the girls have been working, they have been moving up and have a pretty good chance at reaching their goal,” Friesen said .
